Curriculum Goals
"We shall learn and strive to master the science, art, craft and religion of surgery."
-Vijay K. Maker, MD.
Create an organizational structure of academic, clinical, and technical criteria to facilitate the education of residents in general surgery. Maintain educational criteria that are congruent with the aims of the American Board of Surgery and the Residency Review Committee in General Surgery.
Facilitate the self-directed study of residents via recommended readings and learning activities.
Integrate principles of basic sciences with clinical experiences with monthly exams, where answers are discussed at the end of each examination.
Guide the mechanism for residents' progressive responsibility from initial patient care to complete patient management for all patient age groupings, from neonatal to geriatrics.
Provide surgical residents with a reference for functioning as teachers, consultants, and above all role models.
Guide surgical residents to use research technology and skill in conducting studies that assist in solving surgical problems.
Foster continuing education to promote lifelong individual initiative and creative scholarship.
Conferences
A variety of conferences and other educational activities are provided to augment the surgical experience. Some are held in common and afford the opportunity for residents at varying MGH sites to meet on a regular basis.
- Weekly basic science conference
- Weekly Morbidity and Mortality conference
- Weekly critical care conference
- Weekly radiology/pathology/oncology conference
- Monthly surgical grand rounds with case presentations from each institution
- Monthly mock orals for senior residents with all juniors in attendance
- Monthly journal club
- Quarterly visiting professor program
Research and Scholarly Activities
Each MGH resident is expected to publish at least one original paper in a referred medical journal during the five-year residency program. Typically, our residents far exceed this number in publications and presentations.
Each year, one PGY 2 resident from the Categorical program is afforded the opportunity to spend his or her third year in full-time research activity - either clinical or laboratory. This research year is in addition to the five regular years of clinical training. The research opportunities available encompass all the resources of the University of Illinois College of Medicine at Chicago but are not limited to the University of Illinois. This position is fully funded through the program.
Research facilities and excellent support staff are available. In addition, the animal laboratory at the University of Illinois College of Medicine provides to all MGH residents a wide variety of opportunities for research projects.

One PGY 3 resident spends one year in full-time research. He/She will then complete the clinical rotations of years 3, 4, and 5 during the fourth, fifth, and sixth years of residency training.
Clinic Description:
Each MGH hospital has outpatient clinics where residents serve as primary physician and the responsible attending surgeon acts as consultant. In addition, residents see patients at the offices of faculty members. Together, they make the diagnosis, admit the patient and prepare them for surgery, conduct the surgery, and participate in the follow-up care and rehabilitation.
GME Core Curriculum
Each graduating resident is required to finish the following 13 interactive, faculty supervised and critiqued core modules covering the 6 ACGME competencies. It is preferred that 3 modules are done every year of your residency.
